Anthony Williams

Director of Music & Organist

Dr. Anthony Williams joined the staff at First (Scots) as Director of Music and Organist in January 2024 after an over 30-year college teaching career. Prior to coming to First (Scots), he was a member of the music faculty at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he served as university organist and taught organ and music history courses. He also served as organist and choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

From 1990 to 2005 Anthony was a member of the music faculty at Dillard University in New Orleans. At Fisk he was director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers® and the youngest person in the history of this ensemble to hold that position. He returned to Fisk in fall 2005 as visiting artist in residence following the evacuation from New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. In the fall 2022, he was named interim director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers following the untimely passing of their longtime director, Dr. Paul T. Kwami.

Anthony has performed organ recitals in cathedrals, churches, colleges, and universities throughout the United States, as well as Central America and Europe. He has performed three recitals for the Piccolo Spoleto Festival L’Organo Series, most recently here at First (Scots) in 2023. He has also presented workshops on Organ Music of Black Composers for several chapters of the American Guild of Organists as well as two of their national conventions. In 2018, he was the Service Organist at the Presbyterian Association of Musicians Worship and Music Conference held in Montreat, North Carolina. Anthony holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the University of Michigan, and the American Conservatory of Music.

Anthony is married to Allison Boccia Williams, who is also an organist and church musician. They often perform organ and piano and organ duets together, as well as joint performances with their church choirs. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, ballroom dancing, and spending time with his three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Gracie, Carmen, and Winston.
