First (Scots) Presbyterian Church

Beyond The Burning Bush

An Official History of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church

In 1731, what is now known as First (Scots) Presbyterian Church was organized by members from twelve Scottish families that formerly worshiped at the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston.  Since its founding, First (Scots) has forged a distinguished legacy marked by the service of 22 pastors; the profound impacts of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars; and damage from hurricanes in 1885, 1893, 1911 and 1989; an earthquake in 1886; a tornado in 1938; and a devastating fire in 1945. Throughout this tumultuous journey, the church has found ways to celebrate its heritage and significant contributions to the community.

Many are unaware that the history of First (Scots) has been meticulously chronicled in the book Beyond the Burning Bush, written by Edward Guerrant Lilly, D.D., who served as pastor from 1937 to 1955. Originally published in 1971, a second edition was issued in 1986.  This significant work was officially adopted as the church’s official history by the Session in 1981, coinciding with the congregation’s 250th anniversary.  It offers valuable historical viewpoints and insights into the church’s property, buildings and ministers.

The rich history of First (Scots) is deeply woven into the fabric of Charleston. For those interested in exploring this engaging narrative further, copies of Dr. Lilly’s book are available in the church office.
